Welcome to the 2019 winter baseball season! To the parents and players who are returning from season 2018, and also to the many new parents and players who are keen to play baseball this coming season. We are gearing up for a big season with our new club rooms on track to be handed over on May 10th. We will have contingencies in place to play at Loyola Reserve prior to that date, and to continue to train once daylight savings finishes. We have also finalised the design and the council budget submission for the new nets and training facilities. These shall be presented for inclusion in the 2019/20 Banyule council budget for construction to commence later this year.
Some important training information is below:
- Tee Ball will commence Saturday 4th May for 10 weeks at Loyola. This allows us to get the rest of the juniors underway. More details to follow as numbers are confirmed (tee ball kids don’t train mid week).
- Rookie Ball, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 games commence on Saturday 27th April. The start of the junior season has been delayed due to school holidays and summer state championships occurring. The league is contemplating practice scrimmage games on the 9th and 16th April if you’re around…details will follow.
- Under 17’s – training with the senior squad has commenced: Next session this Saturday 23 March: 10am – 12pm, then Wed 27 March: 6pm – 8p, Sat 30 March: 10.00am – 12.00pm, then every Wednesday 6pm – 8pm from 3rd March as the senior season starts April 6th.
- Training for Rookie Ball, Under 13 and Under 15 will be Tuesday nights commencing this coming Tuesday 26th at 5.30pm – 7.15pm (daylight savings), then Tuesday 2nd at 5.30pm – 7.15 (daylight savings).
Training for RB/13/15 will continue during school holidays commencing 6pm (under lights) for those who can attend until 7.45pm. This will be the training time for the rest of the season. THERE WILL NOT be any Monday night training this season. I apologise if this is inconvenient or if you have changed swimming/music can’t attend, we needed to accommodate siblings and to maximise on available coaching resources to ensure the kids get the best development opportunities.
For the Tuesday nights we will be adopting a new approach to training. Similar to the summer rep squad training, we will pool coaching knowledge and available adults and split the kids into groups depending on numbers. We can then plan stations where kids will get specific support around throwing mechanics, fielding, tee work, hitting in the cages, hitting live, pitching and catching. Every 10-15 minutes, the kids will rotate stations in their group. We will look for parents of all skill level to assist at times, and can accommodate any capacity or skill level of the parent! It will also allow for Club Coach Jarryd Rogers and other senior players who attend at times to work with kids on their areas of expertise.
Registrations: please see this guide via the Watsonia website: http://watsoniabaseballclub.com/2019-fees-and-registration/ There is also a club component and we will email details once we finalise details in the next week. Fees are likely to be the same as last season.
Playing uniform/merchandise: As you know we don’t have clubrooms at the moment however we will organise to bring a heap of tee shirts, hats/jumpers down to the junior training session on April 2nd so you can gear up for the season! We can’t get EFT facilities until the rooms are ready but will have banking details for direct debit and our WBC Store will be open on TeamApp. Cash works too!
TeamApp: If you aren’t on the WBC TeamApp group, please download Teamapp via https://www.teamapp.com/clubs Search for the Watsonia Baseball Club, ask to Join as a Senior/Junior player, noting your child’s name in the request, and once approved a few hours later by one of the committee, allow push notifications under NEWS. Whilst I will email when I can if it is absolutely pouring during the day and training may be cancelled, we will also push late changes via TeamApp. Any problems, please ask after training next week.
WBC Committee: The AGM for the 2018 season will be on Wednesday 3rd April at 8pm at Loyola. It should be a short and sharp meeting. We have a group who are keen to assist, however we would welcome another Committee member or two, and welcome junior parents to be involved. We can ween you in and won’t overload you, the more help the better as it is your club. Please feel free to reply or call me to discus, or email Club Secretary Telen Stanfield via email@example.com
Finally don’t forget if you bring a friend down who joins, you both get $50 off your fees (not applicable for tee ball).
A lot of information. Please feel free to contact us if you have any specific questions, otherwise all the best at training Saturday if you are in Under 17, and see you Tuesday if you are in RB/U13/U15. Tee ballers – will be in touch. If you haven’t informed us of your intent to return (or not), please do so as soon as possible.
